Kanchanjunga Express Accident : A major train accident occurred today near New Jalpaiguri station in West Bengal. The Kanchanjunga Express, which was heading to Sealdah, was rear-ended by a freight train. The collision caused two coaches of the train to derail, resulting in the death of 15 people so far.

The train accident also injured 60 people. Over the past few years, several train accidents have occurred, claiming the lives of hundreds of people and shaking the entire nation. Here is a recount of some of these incidents:

Saharsa Passenger Train Accident in Bihar, 800 Deaths

On June 6, 1981, the deadliest train accident in India occurred. More than 800 people were killed when the Mansi-Saharsa passenger train derailed and fell into a river in Bihar.

Balasore Train Accident

On June 2 of last year, a major train accident occurred in Balasore, Odisha, which is hard to forget. The Coromandel Express, traveling from Chennai to Howrah, collided with a stationary freight train on the loop line. After the collision, several coaches of the Coromandel Express derailed and hit the Yeshvantpur-Howrah Express passing on the adjacent track. The accident resulted in 296 deaths and injured over 1200 people. The cause was attributed to incorrect signaling.

Indore-Patna Express Train Accident

In November 2016, the Indore-Patna Express train derailed in Uttar Pradesh, leading to the death of 146 people as several coaches collided with each other.

Jhargram Gyaneshwari Express Train Accident

On May 28, 2010, a major train accident occurred in Jhargram, Bengal, when the Gyaneshwari Express collided with a freight train. The accident resulted in 146 deaths and injured over 200 people. Officials attributed the accident to Maoist rebels.

Rajdhani Express Coaches Fell into the River

In 2002, a horrifying train accident occurred when several coaches of the luxury Rajdhani Express, traveling from Kolkata to New Delhi, fell into the swollen Dhavi River, killing at least 120 people.

Mumbai Local Train Bomb Blasts

In 1995, over 300 people died in a train accident near Agra. The Kalindi Express collided with the Purushottam Express near Firozabad due to an obstruction on the track caused by a nilgai (blue bull), leading to the collision and injuring 344 people.

Mahbubnagar Train Accident

On November 23, 1956, a train fell into the Marudyar River near Hyderabad, about 100 km away, due to a bridge collapse caused by flooding. At least 154 people died, and 115 were injured in the accident.
