Major Announcements Made in GST Council Meeting, No GST on Platform Tickets…

GST Council Meeting : The 53rd GST Council Meeting was chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The finance ministers of states and union territories were also present in the meeting. Several major decisions were made during this meeting. The Finance Minister announced that many services of Indian Railways have been exempted from GST. Now, there will be no GST on platform tickets.

Uniform Tax on Milk

The Finance Minister mentioned that the GST Council has recommended waiving interest and penalties on demand notices issued under Section 73 of the GST Act. Additionally, it was suggested to impose 12% GST on solar cookers and milk cans made of steel and aluminum. Moreover, a 12% GST on cartons made of paper and paperboard was also recommended.

The Finance Minister stated that a 12% GST on all types of sprinklers was also discussed. She mentioned that reducing GST on paper cartons and sprinklers would significantly benefit apple producers in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Additionally, a system to ensure Aadhaar-based biometric identification across the country will be implemented. This will curb incidents of fraudulent input tax credit claims through fake invoices.

The Finance Minister also stated that the GST Council has granted an exemption of up to ₹20,000 per person per month on earnings from hostels outside educational institutions.
