Supermoon Blue Moon to be Visible in the Sky on Raksha Bandhan: When, Where, and How to Watch
Supermoon Blue Moon 2024: On August 19, the festival of Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated across the country. On this day, a significant astronomical event will occur. In the evening, the largest and brightest moon, known as the Super Blue Moon, will be visible in the sky. Do you know what a supermoon is and why this will be a blue moon? Perhaps only a few of you are aware, so let’s explain…
Blue Moon: An Astronomical Phenomenon
A Blue Moon is an astronomical phenomenon that occurs either when there are two full moons in a single month or when there are four full moons in a season, with the third being called a Blue Moon. A supermoon happens when the moon is closest to Earth, appearing 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon.
Why Does a Supermoon Occur?
A supermoon is observed a few times a year during certain full moons. The moon orbits Earth, varying its distance. When the moon is extremely close to Earth, a supermoon occurs, happening when the moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth. On the night of August 19, 2024, the moon will be exceptionally close to Earth, coinciding with the full moon of the Hindu month of Sawan.
When Does a Blue Moon Occur?
The lunar cycle takes 29.5 days to complete, requiring 354 days for 12 lunar cycles. Thus, every 2.5 years or more, a 13th full moon appears within a calendar year, known as a Blue Moon. This Blue Moon will be visible on August 19, 2024. However, the moon won’t appear blue in color. This will also coincide with a supermoon. Blue Moons typically occur every 2-3 years, with the next seasonal Blue Moon expected on May 31, 2026.
Will the Moon Actually Appear Blue?
The term “Blue Moon” dates back to 1528 and its origin is somewhat mysterious. Some believe it derives from an old English phrase meaning “betrayer moon,” while others think it refers to rare atmospheric conditions causing the moon to appear blue. Recently, the term has been used to describe the second full moon in a month with two full moons. The moon doesn’t actually turn blue but appears in its natural color, though larger and brighter. Blue Moons generally occur once every 2-3 years.
When to Watch the Super Blue Moon
The Blue Moon will be visible worldwide, though the viewing times will vary. The Super Blue Moon will be visible on August 18, 19, and 20. In India, it can be seen from the night of August 19 until just before sunrise on August 20. The best viewing locations will be where the sky is clear and air pollution is low. It’s advisable to move away from city lights to better observe the supermoon.
