India’s star wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics due to exceeding the weight limit. Vinesh was disqualified for weighing slightly more than 50 kilograms, rendering her ineligible for the finals and missing out on a medal. The Indian Olympic Association publicly announced that despite overnight efforts, Vinesh was disqualified. On Wednesday morning, her weight was slightly over the 50-kilogram limit.
According to association sources, Vinesh’s weight exceeded the standard by 100 grams. As per competition rules, this disqualifies her from even a silver medal. In the 50 kg category, only gold and bronze medals will be awarded.
A formal announcement from the Olympic Association is expected by Wednesday evening. On Tuesday, Vinesh’s weight met the standard, but maintaining the weight daily before the competition is necessary.
